Nami Island day trip from Seoul: guided tour or DIY by train?

Nami Island is about an hour from Seoul by ITX train, or a door-to-door ride on a guided coach tour. Here's how the two compare, what the tour packages add, and when the island looks its best.

Tour or do it yourself?

Take a tour if you want one easy day with no timetables, especially if you also want the Garden of Morning Calm or a rail bike ride. The coach leaves from central Seoul, admission and the ferry are covered, and the tour isn't cancelled for rain. It suits a first trip or a solo traveler.

Go on your own if you'd rather beat the crowds. The island's designated shuttle from Seoul uses the same pick-up points as the tour and reaches the island at 11:30, while by train you can be on an early boat. Through November 22, 2026 the first ferry leaves at 07:30, and buying your ticket and boarding before 08:00 gets a lower early-bird rate. Going alone also lets you stay for sunset and choose your own second stop.

  3. 3Best for the fastest train to Gapyeong

    ITX-Cheongchun train tickets

Klook's Korail booking covers ITX trains, including ITX-Cheongchun, and lists Gapyeong (Nami Island) as a destination. The ticket goes to your phone, so you board without a counter or printout. ITX-Cheongchun takes about 60 minutes from Yongsan or 42 from Cheongnyangni.

Doing it yourself: train, bus and ferry

From Seoul, ride the ITX-Cheongchun to Gapyeong Station: about 60 minutes from Yongsan or 42 from Cheongnyangni. The slower Gyeongchun Line subway takes about 50 minutes from Sangbong and runs on a regular transit card. From Gapyeong Station it is 1.5 km to the Nami Island wharf: about 20 minutes on foot, or 5 minutes by city bus 10-4 or taxi. The wharf plays the 'immigration office' of the make-believe Naminara Republic, which is why your ticket is called a visa.

Ferries leave the wharf from 08:00 to 21:00: every 30 minutes until 09:00, every 10 to 20 minutes until 18:00, then every 30 minutes. The last boat back leaves the island at 21:05, and the crossing takes about 5 minutes. As of October 2026 the autumn schedule adds a 07:30 first boat every day and boats until 21:30 on Fridays, weekends and public holidays, through November 22.

  • Zipwire: fly about 940 m from an 80 m tower onto the island in roughly 90 seconds, 09:00–18:00, for riders 140–200 cm tall. The ticket includes admission and the ferry back.
  • Online zipwire bookings are for a fixed slot and are refunded only if weather stops the ride; same-day seats are sold at the tower if any are left.
  • Plan 3 to 5 hours on the island, longer with a bike ride or lunch.

What the tour packages add

Klook's Nami tour is sold by combination: Nami only, Nami plus the Garden of Morning Calm, Nami plus the Gangchon Rail Bike, and versions with Alpaca World, up to three stops in one day. The page lists the whole trip at 9 to 13 hours. The zipwire isn't included and can only be bought on site.

The Garden of Morning Calm is a private garden on Mt. Chukryeong that opened in 1996, with about 5,000 plant species in some 22 themed gardens. It's open daily 08:30–19:00 (last entry 18:00), and October 3 to November 1, 2026 brings 30th-anniversary events. The day before the tour, a reminder email with a group-chat link arrives between 15:00 and 17:00, and traffic or weather can change the schedule on the day.

Doing the combo yourself: the Gapyeong tour bus

Without a tour, the Gapyeong City Tour Bus links the same area. Course A runs from the Nami Island stop to Petite France in about 25 minutes, and there you can change to Course B for the Garden of Morning Calm at no extra charge. There's no booking: buy a day pass from the driver. The last bus back to Nami leaves the garden at 17:05.

The bus doesn't run on Wednesdays unless it's a public holiday, so a tour is the simpler choice that day. Petite France, a Little Prince-themed French village used as a set for K-dramas such as My Love from the Star, is open daily 09:00–18:00.

Best seasons for Nami Island

Autumn is the island's high point. The operator says leaves start turning in mid-October and the ginkgo lanes are at their best from late October to mid-November; in mid-November, ginkgo leaves sent from Seoul's Songpa-gu are spread along the Songpa Ginkgo Lane. Cherry blossoms come in mid-to-late April, and January and February bring snow scenes.

The island is open every day of the year. Ferries run in rain and snow, and an icebreaker keeps them going when the river freezes. In any season, a weekday and an early boat give you the quietest walk, including the Metasequoia Lane made famous by Winter Sonata. On weekends and holidays, traffic can make the Gapyeong tour bus and tour coaches run late, so leave some slack in your plans.
