Incheon Airport to Seoul: train, bus or taxi, and which to pick

The short answer
Take the AREX Express if you're staying near Seoul Station, Myeongdong or City Hall. Take the AREX all-stop train if you're staying in Hongdae, since it stops at Hongik Univ. Station. Take an airport limousine bus to COEX, Jamsil and other hotel areas the train doesn't reach directly, especially with big suitcases.
Take a taxi or book a private transfer if you're a family or group, land late, or simply want to go door to door. Whatever you choose, pick up a T-money card or WOWPASS at the airport so the rest of the trip is tap-and-go.

-
4Best for subways, buses and taxis for the rest of your trip
T-money card (Incheon pickup)
A rechargeable card for subways, buses and taxis across Korea, with transfer discounts between bus and subway. You collect it at Incheon Airport and top it up at any subway machine, including at Incheon Airport Station, or at convenience stores. The card itself never expires.
-
5Best if you want one card for shopping and transit
WOWPASS prepaid card
A prepaid card for foreign visitors that you load with any of 16 currencies, in the app or at WOWPASS machines, to pay in shops across Korea. It doubles as a T-money transit card, but the transit balance is topped up separately with Korean won cash at subway machines or convenience stores.
AREX: Express or all-stop train
AREX runs two kinds of train from the airport. The Express goes non-stop to Seoul Station in about 43 minutes from Terminal 1 and 51 minutes from Terminal 2. It uses reserved seats, and you need a ticket before you board, sold online, at the station machines and at the Express counters on B1 of each terminal's transportation center. Express riders get free Wi-Fi and bottled water on request.
The all-stop train takes about 59 minutes from Terminal 1 and 66 minutes from Terminal 2 to Seoul Station, and some trains run 2–6 minutes longer. It works like the subway: you tap in with a transit card. On the way it stops at Gimpo Airport, Digital Media City, Hongik Univ. and Gongdeok, so it's the easy pick for Hongdae and Mapo hotels. At Seoul Station you can change to subway Lines 1 and 4 or the KTX.
Airport limousine buses
Limousine buses run from Incheon to many parts of Seoul, and they drop you closer to some hotels than the train does, with your suitcases stowed underneath. Buy a ticket before you board: in Terminal 1 the ticket booths are on the 1st floor, and in Terminal 2 they're in the B1 Transportation Center, which also has ticket machines. To find your route, use the Search Buses page under To & From on the Incheon Airport website.
Timing matters if you land late. VisitKorea says most public transport from the airport to central Seoul ends at around 23:30. After that, night buses with route numbers starting with N run to areas such as Gangnam Express Bus Terminal and DDP, and you buy their tickets at a booth or machine.
Taxis and private transfers
Standard and deluxe taxis wait at the taxi stands outside the arrivals area of both terminals, and they take cash, credit cards and transit cards. The airport lists standard, deluxe, jumbo (9-seat) and international taxis. International taxis have foreign-language service, need to be booked ahead and charge a flat fare within Seoul. Night surcharges apply from 22:00 to 04:00.
Use only the official taxi stands. Incheon Airport warns that illegal touts in call vans posing as taxis solicit passengers and overcharge them. If you'd rather not deal with any of it, a private transfer gives you a driver waiting in arrivals with your name on a sign and an all-inclusive price fixed when you book.
Which way for your hotel area
Match the ride to where you're sleeping, then check the latest route on the operator's site before you fly.
- Myeongdong, City Hall, Namsan: AREX Express to Seoul Station, then subway Line 4 for Myeongdong.
- Hongdae and Yeonnam-dong: AREX all-stop train straight to Hongik Univ. Station.
- COEX and Jamsil: a limousine bus, so you don't change trains with luggage.
- Landing after about 23:30, or a family with lots of bags: a night bus, a taxi or a private transfer.
T-money or WOWPASS for the rest of the trip
T-money works on all public transport and at shops that show its logo, and it gives transfer discounts between buses and subways within a set time. VisitKorea says you can buy and load it at convenience stores nationwide. If you leave money on it, larger refunds are handled at Tmoney Town near Seoul Station and smaller ones at convenience stores.
WOWPASS is for foreign visitors only. It works on public transport nationwide and as a payment card, and any leftover balance can be returned as Korean won cash at a WOWPASS kiosk. On your way home, AREX Express ticket holders can check in at the Seoul Station City Airport Terminal for same-day international flights from Incheon. Check-in runs 05:20–19:00 and the airlines vary, so check yours before you go.
FAQ
What is the fastest way from Incheon Airport to Seoul?
The AREX Express train. It runs non-stop to Seoul Station in about 43 minutes from Terminal 1 and 51 minutes from Terminal 2. If your hotel is far from Seoul Station, add the onward subway or taxi ride before you compare it with a bus.
AREX Express or all-stop: which should I take?
Take the Express for Seoul Station and the hotels around it: it's faster and every seat is reserved. Take the all-stop train if you're going to Hongik Univ., Gongdeok, Digital Media City or Gimpo Airport, since the Express doesn't stop there. You can ride the all-stop train with a T-money card.
How do I get from Incheon Airport to Seoul late at night?
Most public transport into central Seoul stops at around 23:30. After that, take a night bus (route numbers start with N), a taxi from the official stands or a private transfer you booked ahead. Taxis add a night surcharge between 22:00 and 04:00.
Should I get T-money or WOWPASS?
If you only need a transit card, T-money is the simple choice. If you also want to load foreign currency and pay in shops with the same card, WOWPASS does both, though its transit balance is still topped up with Korean won cash.
